How we pick.

1 · How we evaluate

Every pick is an editorial judgment built from three inputs:

• Published specifications — the measurable facts that actually differ within a category (noise-reduction rating for earplugs, momme weight for silk, TOG for sleep sacks, lux and ramp time for sunrise alarms, cooling method, battery, materials, price).
• Independent review consensus — how a product performs across credible third-party reviews and large bodies of verified-owner feedback, rather than a manufacturer's marketing claim taken at face value.
• Editor expertise — the category judgment of a credentialed sleep coach (see section 6).

These are editorialselections, not lab tests. If a reviewer has genuine first-hand experience with a specific product, that's noted on that product's page — everywhere else, the verdict is our reasoned judgment from the evidence above.

2 · What we compare against

We rank products on their published, verifiable specs — the numbers that genuinely separate one product from another in its category. We don't invent measurements. Where a spec isn't published, we say so rather than estimate it, and where a performance claim comes from the maker, we attribute it rather than present it as our own finding.

For claims that touch health or safety, we cross-check against independent reviews and published guidance rather than repeating a brand's number as fact.

3 · Score dimensions

Most products carry a “How it scores” card rating them on five dimensions that matter for their category, judged from published specs. Earplugs, for example, are scored on noise blocking, comfort and fit; wearables on accuracy, battery, comfort and value.

Each category has its own dimensions, and the card shows the breakdown so you can see where a product gains or loses points. The overall score is an editor's judgement from published specs, research and owner reports, never adjusted for an affiliate relationship.

4 · Refusal policy

We publish negative verdicts. If a product doesn't deserve a buy, we say so — with the reasons and what we'd choose instead. When a category isn't mature enough to recommend anything, we say that too.

When nothing in a category earns a recommendation, we leave it off. The absence of coverage is the verdict.

5 · Disclosure

Product pages say we may earn a commission under their price table, and the footer of every page names the retailers that pay us.

The full list of retailers that pay us, and their rates, lives at /affiliate-disclosure. What a retailer pays us does not decide a score or a ranking.

6 · Editor credentials

Health- and parenting-adjacent content is edited by credentialed sleep coaches. No page has completed reviewer sign-off yet:

• Logan Foley, CSSC — Certified Sleep Science Coach. Edits adult sleep tools, sleep science articles, and wearables.
• Marie Hansen, PSC — Pediatric Sleep Consultant. Edits parent-zone tools, baby and toddler articles, baby monitors.

Content flagged reviewed has completed reviewer signoff. Content flagged pending reviewhas shipped under our editorial process but has not yet received independent reviewer signoff — the verdict is ours, not the reviewer's.
