Five decisions collapse this whole category into a clear pick.
This is the whole decision. Valerian (Nighty Night, Sleepytime Extra, Pukka) is the sleep herb with the most clinical evidence — earthy, potent, the pick when you genuinely struggle to fall asleep. Chamomile and lavender (Chamomile & Lavender, and the base of Yogi) are gentle calmers — a soft wind-down, not sedation. Trouble sleeping → valerian. Just want to relax → chamomile.
Half a sleep tea's power is behavioral: the warm cup, the aroma, and the consistent pre-bed timing train your brain that sleep is coming. Drink it 30-45 minutes before bed, same time nightly. A gentle tea used consistently beats a strong tea used randomly.
Valerian teas are effective, which means real cautions: skip during pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical OK, never combine with sleeping pills, sedatives, or alcohol, and don't drive after a strong cup. Watch licorice root (in Yogi) if you have high blood pressure. Chamomile is the safest option when any of these apply.
The calming compounds in chamomile and lavender are volatile oils that escape with the steam — cover the cup while it steeps. Valerian needs a long steep (10-15 minutes) to pull the actives out. A rushed 2-minute dunk gives you flavored water, not a functional tea.
$4-5 → Yogi Bedtime or Celestial Sleepytime Extra, the everyday-value picks. $6 → Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night or Chamomile & Lavender for pharmacopoeial-grade organic. $7 → Pukka Night Time when taste and sourcing are worth the premium. All are pennies per cup — the cheapest sleep intervention there is.
