How to pick a mattress topper in 2026
Five decisions collapse this whole category into a clear pick.
1. How thick should you go?
2 inches (Linenspa) softens the surface — enough for back sleepers and lighter bodies. 3 inches (Tempur, Lucid) is the pressure-relief sweet spot for side sleepers. 4 inches (Zinus, Sleep Innovations) adds deep cushion and real height — best for heavier sleepers, but you'll need deep-pocket sheets.
2. Which foam actually lasts?
Density is destiny. TEMPUR material keeps its feel for 5+ years and carries a 10-year warranty; budget foams (Lucid, Linenspa, Zinus) soften noticeably by year 2-4 — their 3-5 year warranties tell you the honest lifespan. Buy premium if this is your long-term bed, budget if it's a bridge.
3. Do you sleep hot?
Gel infusions and ventilation channels (Lucid, Linenspa) shed some heat, and fiber pillow-tops (Sleep Innovations) and natural latex breathe more freely than solid memory foam. Dense memory foam such as TEMPUR runs warm — pair it with breathable sheets or look elsewhere if you already overheat.
4. Can a topper fix your mattress?
Toppers fix two problems. A soft topper softens a mattress that is too firm and adds pressure relief; a firm latex or dense foam topper puts support back on one that has gone too soft but still lies flat (see our firm mattress toppers guide). Neither can fix sagging — foam follows the dip underneath it. If your mattress hammocks in the middle, put the topper money toward a replacement instead; if you are unsure what firmness to replace it with, a flippable mattress gives you a softer and a firmer side to choose between.
