Best firm mattress toppers, ranked for a mattress that has gone too soft

A mattress that is too soft lets your hips sink lower than your shoulders, and back and stomach sleepers feel it first, often as a stiff lower back in the morning. A firm topper is a layer of springy latex or dense foam that sits on top and holds you up, for far less than a new mattress. It has two honest limits. It cannot fix a mattress that has sagged, because the topper follows the dip underneath. And firmer is not automatically better for your back: a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain found medium-firm mattresses did better than firm ones. So the aim is to put the support back, not to sleep on a board. We ranked these four from each brand's published specs and listings; we have not tested them ourselves.

Quick answer

The best firm mattress topper is the Sleep On Latex Pure Green in its Firm grade: certified organic natural latex with its density and firmness published, from a brand that tells you to use at least 2 inches and preferably 3 to firm up a soft bed. Latex Mattress Factory's Firm is a plainer natural latex alternative. For a worn mattress that needs support back without feeling hard, ViscoSoft's dense medium-firm foam is the pick, and BedStory's 3-inch is the lowest-priced firm option here.

#1 · Best overall firm topper

Sleep On Latex Pure Green Latex Topper (Firm, 2-Inch)

Certified organic natural latex in a Firm grade the brand rates at 46 lbf, with density and test method published.

Sleep On Latex Pure Green Latex Topper, Firm, 2-Inch
Editor score8.6/10
$249.00
(Amazon price as of – Details)Shop at best price →Full review →

Sleep On Latex sells its Pure Green topper in Soft, Medium and Firm, and it publishes what each grade means: the Firm is 5.9 lb per cubic foot and 46 lbf at 25% compression, tested to an ASTM foam standard, against 20 lbf for the Soft. The latex is GOLS certified organic, and Sleep On Latex says its firm foam is strong and supportive but not rigid or stiff, which is what you want on a bed that has gone soft: support without a slab.

The brand's own advice is useful too. To firm up a mattress that is too soft, it says to use at least 2 inches and preferably 3; we link the 2-inch, and the 3-inch Firm is worth the step up if your bed feels soft right through. It comes bare unless you buy one of the brand's organic cotton covers, and Sleep On Latex says most customers skip the cover and use a fitted sheet. It costs more than the foam picks here, and latex is heavy to move. Best for back and stomach sleepers who want a properly firm, long-lasting layer and like knowing the numbers.

Pros

  • ✓Published figures: 5.9 lb density, 46 lbf at 25% IFD
  • ✓GOLS certified organic latex
  • ✓1, 2 and 3-inch layers in three firmness grades
  • ✓5-year warranty

Cons

  • ✗Costs more than the foam picks here
  • ✗No cover included by default
  • ✗Heavy to lift and turn
#2 · Best plain natural latex

Latex Mattress Factory Dunlop Latex Topper (Firm, 2-Inch)

Natural Dunlop latex at a published 38 ILD from a factory-direct maker, with an X-Firm grade on its own store.

Latex Mattress Factory Dunlop Latex Topper, Firm, 2-Inch

Latex Mattress Factory makes its firm topper from what it calls 100% natural latex, made by the Dunlop process, and sells it in two grades: Firm at 38 ILD and X-Firm at 44 ILD. Amazon carries only the Firm in a 2-inch layer, which is the one we link. That is a sensible middle choice for a mattress that has gone a little soft, and the brand itself suggests Firm for sleepers who want a firmer, more supportive surface on a bed that is not badly worn.

If your mattress is properly soft, the brand's advice is to start with X-Firm instead, and that grade, like the 3-inch, is only on the brand's own store. The product page states no warranty length, trial or certification, which is less than Sleep On Latex gives you, and there is no cover in the box. The brand says its latex toppers can last up to 10 years with proper care. Best for buyers who want plain natural latex at a published firmness and are happy without the organic paperwork.

Pros

  • ✓Natural Dunlop latex with a published 38 ILD
  • ✓X-Firm grade available from the brand store
  • ✓Springy latex, so you sit on it rather than sink

Cons

  • ✗Amazon sells only the Firm 2-inch
  • ✗No warranty, trial or certification stated on the product page
  • ✗No cover included
#3 · Best for a worn mattress

ViscoSoft Restore HD Select High Density Topper (3-Inch)

Dense 3.1 lb memory foam that ViscoSoft calls medium-firm: support back for a tired mattress, with some contouring.

ViscoSoft Restore HD Select High Density Topper, 3-Inch
Editor score8.2/10
$179.95
(Amazon price as of – Details)Shop at best price →Full review →

The Restore HD is here for a different buyer. ViscoSoft rates its foam at 3.1 lb per cubic foot, which it says is denser than most foam toppers, and describes the feel as medium-firm: it gives at the shoulders and hips and pushes back elsewhere. ViscoSoft pitches it at an older mattress that needs more support or a mattress that is too soft, which is the right job for it. Given the research on medium-firm surfaces, that middle feel may suit a back that dislikes a hard bed.

What it is not is truly firm. If you want a hard surface, the latex picks are firmer, and ViscoSoft says its own 4-inch feels firmer than the 3-inch we link. You do get more in the box than with the latex picks: a removable, machine-washable cover, gel-lined corner straps and a beaded non-slip base, plus a 5-year warranty. Memory foam can sleep warmer than latex despite the gel and airflow channels. Best for sleepers whose mattress has worn soft and who want support back without losing all the cushioning.

Pros

  • ✓High-density 3.1 lb foam, per ViscoSoft
  • ✓Cover, straps and non-slip base included
  • ✓5-year warranty

Cons

  • ✗Medium-firm by the brand's own description, not truly firm
  • ✗Can sleep warmer than latex
  • ✗Takes up to 48 hours to fully expand
#4 · Best on a budget

BedStory Firm Memory Foam Topper (3-Inch)

A 3-inch two-layer firm foam topper with a washable cover and corner straps, for the least money here.

BedStory Firm Memory Foam Topper, 3-Inch
Editor score7.8/10
$109.99$134.49
(Amazon Prime member price as of – Details)Shop at best price →Full review →

BedStory's firm topper costs well under the others and still comes ready to use: a zipped, machine-washable cover and four corner straps. The 3-inch we link is, per BedStory, just under an inch of gel memory foam over about two inches of support foam, and BedStory labels its 2, 3 and 4-inch versions Medium Firm, Firm and Extra Firm. It is refreshingly direct about what the topper is for: it calls it firm, not soft or medium, and says a mattress that sags or is broken down needs replacing instead.

The gap is information. BedStory publishes no density or firmness figure, so you cannot set it against the latex picks on paper, and memory foam softens as it warms. The 365-night trial and 10-year warranty it advertises apply to its own store; an Amazon purchase follows Amazon's return policy. Best for someone who wants to firm up a soft guest bed or a first mattress without spending latex money.

Pros

  • ✓Costs the least of the four
  • ✓Washable zipped cover and four corner straps
  • ✓CertiPUR-US foam; BedStory says it is fiberglass-free

Cons

  • ✗No density or firmness figure published
  • ✗Memory foam softens with warmth
  • ✗The trial and warranty BedStory advertises apply to its own store

Buying criteria

What to check before you buy a firm topper

1.Soft or sagging? Only one of them is a topper problem

Lie on your back and look at where your hips sit. If the whole mattress feels soft but stays level, a firm topper can help. If there is a dip you can see or feel where you sleep, it cannot: the topper drapes into the hollow and you sink with it. BedStory says so plainly on its own page, that a mattress that sags or is broken down needs replacing. Check before you spend, because a firm topper on a sagging bed just moves the money from one problem to another.

2.Latex or memory foam

Latex is springy: it pushes back as soon as you lie on it, so you sit on top rather than sink in, and it is sold in true firm grades with published firmness figures. Memory foam is slower and contours to your shape, and it softens as it warms up. Dense memory foam can still hold you up, but it tends to feel medium-firm rather than hard; ViscoSoft describes its own high-density topper that way. If you want the firmest surface, buy latex. If you want support back with some give at the shoulders and hips, dense foam is the gentler fix.

3.Thickness: 2 inches at least, 3 for a soft bed

A thin layer only changes the surface. Sleep On Latex says its 1-inch topper will not add support, and that to firm up a mattress that is too soft you should use at least 2 inches and preferably 3. BedStory gives similar advice for foam: its 2-inch is a small firmness boost for a mattress only a little too soft, the 3-inch is its most popular, and the 4-inch is for older or very worn mattresses. The softer your mattress feels, the thicker the firm layer should be.

4.Read the firmness numbers, loosely

Latex makers publish ILD or IFD, the force it takes to press the foam down by a set amount; higher means firmer. Sleep On Latex rates its Firm at 46 lbf, and Latex Mattress Factory rates its Firm at 38 and its X-Firm at 44. Brands do not always test the same way, so use the numbers to compare grades within one brand and as a rough guide between brands. Foam makers more often publish density, in pounds per cubic foot, which tells you how much foam there is and how well it should last, not how hard it feels.

5.How firm you actually need

Firm toppers are usually bought for back pain, and the evidence points to the middle, not the extreme. A Lancet trial found that people with chronic low back pain had less pain in bed and less disability after 90 days on a medium-firm mattress than on a firm one, and a 2015 review of 24 trials found medium-firm surfaces best for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment. If your mattress is very soft, a firm topper on top can bring the whole bed back towards medium-firm. If it is already medium, a firm layer may overshoot. A topper is a comfort fix, not a treatment; if back pain persists, see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best firm mattress topper?

The Sleep On Latex Pure Green in its Firm grade, for certified organic latex with its density and firmness published. Latex Mattress Factory's Firm is a plainer natural latex option. ViscoSoft's Restore HD suits a worn mattress if you want support with some give, and BedStory's 3-inch is the lowest-priced firm topper here.

Can a firm topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A firm topper adds support on top of a mattress that is too soft but still level. If your mattress has a dip where you sleep, the topper follows the dip and you sink with it. BedStory, which sells one of the toppers here, says a mattress that sags or is broken down needs replacing.

Is a firm mattress topper good for back pain?

It can help if your mattress is too soft, by stopping your hips from sinking. But firmer is not always better: a Lancet trial found people with chronic low back pain did better on medium-firm mattresses than firm ones. The aim is to bring a soft bed back towards medium-firm. If back pain persists, see a doctor.

How thick should a firm mattress topper be?

At least 2 inches, and 3 if your mattress feels soft right through. Sleep On Latex says its 1-inch will not add support and recommends 2 inches at least, preferably 3, to firm up a soft bed. BedStory suggests its 4-inch for older or very worn mattresses.

Latex or memory foam for a firm topper?

Latex, if you want the firmest surface. It is springy, so you sit on it rather than sink, and it comes in firm grades with published firmness figures. Dense memory foam can also add support but tends to feel medium-firm and softens with warmth. ViscoSoft describes its own high-density foam topper as medium-firm.

What ILD is a firm topper?

Each brand sets its own scale. Sleep On Latex rates its Firm at 46 lbf at 25% compression; Latex Mattress Factory rates its Firm at 38 ILD and its X-Firm at 44. Higher means firmer. Because brands do not always test the same way, compare figures within one brand and treat cross-brand comparisons as rough.
