How to pick a travel pillow in 2026
Five decisions collapse this whole category into a clear pick.
1. Which way does your head fall?
This is the only question that really matters. If your head drops forward, you need something that resists rotation: the Trtl’s internal rib, or the Cabeau S3’s straps anchoring the pillow to the headrest. If your head lolls sideways and forward is not the issue, a plain 360-degree U-pillow is enough. Foam softness solves neither.
2. Wrap or U-shape?
A wrap (Trtl) supports one side at a time, packs flat, and controls head-drop best. A U-shape (Cabeau, Ostrichpillow) supports all round, suits people who shift position, and looks normal. Wraps win on packing and support; U-shapes win on versatility and on not making you look like you have hurt your neck.
3. Do you sleep hot?
A neck pillow is insulation wrapped around a warm part of your body — Cabeau’s own copy compares it to a turtleneck. Fleece wraps are the warmest, solid memory foam is next, and vented foam like the Evolution Cool is the coolest here. Nobody in this category publishes a temperature figure, so treat “cooling” as “less hot” rather than cold.
4. How much carry-on space can you spare?
Compression varies more than you would expect: the Ostrichpillow Go squashes to about 40% of its size, the Cabeau S3 and Cool ship with compression cases, the Evolution Classic does not, and the Trtl simply packs flat and clips to a strap. If your bag is always full, this is worth more than a point of comfort.
