How to pick bed sheets in 2026
Five decisions collapse this whole category into a clear pick.
1. Percale or sateen?
This one choice explains most sheet disappointment. Percale is the crisp, cool, matte weave — the 'hotel sheet' feel that gets softer for years. Sateen (Brooklinen Luxe) is the smooth, lustrous, slightly warmer drape. Hot sleepers and crisp-feel people → percale. Silky-feel people → sateen. Neither is 'better' — they're different products.
2. What's the material really?
Long-staple cotton (Brooklinen, Mellanni's better lines) makes stronger, softer threads that survive hundreds of washes. Microfiber (Utopia, CGK, Bedsure) is polyester: wrinkle-free, cheap, warm, and prone to pilling. Performance blends (Sheex) trade cotton's feel for stretch and moisture-wicking. Budget microfiber is fine for guest rooms; your every-night bed deserves cotton.
3. Ignore thread count marketing
Real quality cotton lives at 300-500 thread count. '1,000-thread-count' claims are made by twisting multi-ply yarns and counting each ply — a red flag, not a feature. A 300TC long-staple percale outperforms a 1,000TC mystery-cotton sateen on softness, cooling, and lifespan.
4. Will they fit your mattress?
Measure mattress + topper height. A mattress with a 3-4" topper needs deep pockets (15-18") — standard pockets pop off nightly and that's the #1 sheet complaint on Amazon. Bedsure and CGK list pocket depth prominently; premium brands assume you'll check.
5. What is your budget?
Under $30 → Utopia or Amazon Basics microfiber for guest beds. $30-50 → Mellanni or Bedsure, the reviewed-by-100k value tier. $100+ → Brooklinen Luxe or Buffy, where long-staple cotton and finishing justify the 365-night-trial price.
