The Eight Sleep Pod 4 earns its hardware price plus Autopilot subscription for hot sleepers and couples with mismatched temperature preferences — temperature regulation is genuinely best-in-class. Skip it if your sleep problems are anxiety, schedule, or apnea; the Pod fixes thermal problems specifically. Note that Eight Sleep has moved on to the Pod 6, so check Pod 4 price and stock before buying.
Who it's for
Hot sleepers, couples with mismatched temperature preferences (each side is independently controlled), and people whose sleep visibly degrades in summer or in over-warm bedrooms. Light-to-moderate sleep issues caused by temperature are exactly Pod 4's lane. If your sleep problem is anxiety, schedule, or apnea, the Pod won't help.
Best for you if…
The exact problem the Pod 4 solves. Cooling range and response speed are best-in-class.
Each side independently controlled — solves the eternal couples thermostat dispute without a wedge issue.
Targeted bed cooling is more effective than whole-room AC for night sweats. Many owners describe it as life-changing.
Temperature isn't your bottleneck. The Pod won't help, and the price will frustrate you.

Yes if your primary sleep bottleneck is temperature — nothing else regulates thermally like this. Skip it if your issue is anxiety, schedule, or apnea. Budget for the hardware plus Autopilot, which Eight Sleep requires for the first 12 months and which the smart features need after that.
Should I buy the Pod 4 or the Pod 6?
Eight Sleep's shop page now lists the Pod 6 only, so the Pod 4 is two generations back. If you can still find Pod 4 stock at a real discount it remains a capable cover on the same 30-night trial and 2-year warranty, but you are buying a superseded generation — confirm the price and stock before committing.
Is the Autopilot subscription mandatory?
For the first year, yes. Eight Sleep says Autopilot is required for the first 12 months, then you can cancel any time. Its help centre says you keep the temperature dial to set each side by hand, but lose the temperature schedule, automatic adjustments, the vibration and thermal alarm, and sleep and health reports. That is most of what makes the Pod worth the price, so plan on keeping it if you buy one.
Eight Sleep vs Purple RestorePremier for hot sleepers?
Different tools. The Purple RestorePremier is a full mattress with passive cooling from its GelFlex Grid — a one-time $4,399 for a queen and no subscription. The Pod 4 goes on top of the mattress you already own and actively cools and heats, with an ongoing subscription. Purple if you want zero ongoing cost; Eight Sleep if you want active climate control with independent zones per side.
Do I need to replace my mattress to use the Pod 4?
No — the Pod is a cover that fits on top of any 8-13" mattress. Zip it on, plug in the base unit, done. This makes it a good upgrade for someone with a decent mattress they're not ready to replace.
How does the 30-night trial work?
Eight Sleep's trial is shorter than industry norm (30 vs 100-365 for competitors). You have 30 nights to return for a full refund. Given the price + subscription commitment, sleep on it hard during that window.
